Howard High began martial arts training in the mid-1960s, in Aikido under the instruction of the late Harry Ishisaka of the Aikikai. After about a year of training, he also began studying Judo, but it was not until 1972 that he became serious about martial arts.
That was when he saw a karate demonstration presented by Fumio Demura, Dan Ivan, Kiyoshi Yamazaki, Sho Kosugi and others, at the now-defunct Japanese Village and Deer Park in Buena Park, California. The demonstration spurred Howard High to begin training at Sensei Yamazaki's dojo in Anaheim, and he continues to train under Sensei Yamazaki today. In addition, Sensei High practices in the traditional sword arts, studying Mugai Ryu under Sensei Darrell Craig of Houston, Texas, and has also studied Yoshinkan Aikido, Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu and Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu with Shoichi Nagase of Tokyo, Japan.
Howard High started teaching Karate in 1976 at Occidental College in Los Angeles California, and continued to do so when he left school to join the U.S. Army. While serving, he continued to instruct at various installations in the United States and Germany, and as a result of his extensive military travel, he had the opportunity to train with many different schools and martial arts systems, including Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Aikido, Goju-Ryu, Shito-Ryu, Shotokan, and others. In Germany he also studied with one of that country's top instructors, Risto Kiiskila, in Frankfurt. After leaving the Army, and while completing his masters degree at the University of Kansas, Sensei High established the Kansas Branch of Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai.
Howard High serves as the International Membership Director for Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai, helping to develop Ryobu-Kai world-wide, and he served for seven years as a Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors for the U.S.A. National Karate-do Federation, the national governing body for karate in the United States.
